Every second Saturday the farmers markets come to New Farm park and the iconic Brisbane Powerhouse. The produce is vibrant and fragrant: freshly picked or hand-made. The people selling their produce are nearly always the ones who have grown it, picked it and packed it. They know their stuff and are passionate about what they do. The experience couldn’t be further from that of shopping at a major supermarket, it’s peaceful, and personal and makes gathering the weekly food an enjoyable experience.

Perhaps because the internet means it’s possible to shop anywhere in the world, at anytime it makes a nice change to find things made by local people in your local area. The Mummy Tree Markets have been held at Morningside (and other locations across Brisbane) since late 2010 and feature a pleasant variety of baby and childrenswear, toys, art and food, the majority of which are homemade by work at home mums.

Today the market was abuzz with bulging pregnant bellies, kids activities and beautifully handmade produce. Here are a few of my favourites:

1. Mumma’s Hugs – Amazingly durable shorts, shirts and hats in classic, fun prints. The range is simple but the workmanship is excellent. As testament, the monster has a pair from last November and they still look new after some serious toddler trashing.

2. Karen Pedwell Photography / Maya Grace Designs – Karen’s portrait series of toy animals set against candy coloured backdrops and miniature bunting are gorgeously whimsical.  Today I bought the pink zebra print and can’t wait to hang it on the monster’s gallery wall.

3. Bannana J Creations -The monster was lucky enough to get a red striped teepee for Christmas and it has been fun for the whole family (I’ll admit to hiding in there on more than one occasion). The teepees are definitely the highlight but to be honest I’m in love with everything Robyn makes. She has an eye for beautiful, fun and crazy prints that bring out the kid in us all but are still stylish enough to have in your living room. The scrabble letter pillows are on my wish list.

4. Red Chalk – A new find for me today, Red Chalk sell baby and kids clothes featuring Kate Perry’s gorgeous illustrations of animals big and small. I’m thinking the ant print leggings will be a great winter staple for the monsters wardrobe (if winter ever comes to Brisbane!).

5. Luv Child – These dresses make me imagine taking my (imaginary) daughter on a country picnic. The prints are as pretty as they come and the detailing of lace and crotchet are enough to make mothers of boys green with envy.
