We went to visit the monsters great grandma (Troy’s grandma), Grace, today. She lives a three hour round trip away from us, which, as inner-city dwellers is the equivalent to driving cross-country, so we don’t get out to see her nearly enough. I’m a notoriously distractable navigator which means we inevitably took the long route through some one-pub towns. It might be a grass is greener situation but driving through these peaceful looking communities always makes me wonder, just a little, if moving out of the city could be perfect for us. Anyway, we did eventually find our way to Grace’s and spent a sweet little afternoon doing not much at all. The monster was enamored with the budgies and I, as always, was drawn to family photos and the stories behind them.
At the end of the month Grace will be receiving a cochlear implant. This is of course both exciting and scary. Grace is a young 87. She holds a great conversation, even with only ten per cent hearing. I’m looking forward to hearing more of the stories behind the photos when she recovers.
